I've added Steve to the infrastructure working group so that he can
participate in this discussion but I wanted to be sure that this issue
was brought to folks attention so that we can look into it.

Welcome aboard Steve!

Terri:

There doesn't (yet) seem to be an infrastructure working group, so I am
sending this email to you (with a copy to webmaster@) in the hope I can
get some explanation for the off behavior of the site, which I suspect
is being caused by some scripting issue.

When I try and access a page (using Firefox 3.5, if it matters) the net
activity indicator turns for a bit, as it will when loading pages, but
then before any content is displayed it stops and there is this long (~7
sec) pause while nothing appears to happen and my browser is effectively
frozen - non-responsive to the GUI, even - before it starts spinning
again and the page normally renders shortly thereafter.

While this may not be a deal-killer it certainly isn't the way I'd like
to see open source promoted to government!

I attach a Firebug network download analysis which indicates that the
problem appears to be an extremely long delay before the
DOMContentLoaded event occurs. This is may be the result of extensive
work in jQuery, which I note is the scripting package employed on the
site, but I can't say for sure without further investigation. I am at
something of a loss to know why jQuery is being sucked in to every page.
It could be "squished" for better speed, but that isn't the real issue

Please let me know if I, or others in the Python community, can be of
further assistance with this.

On a less technical note I decided that despite being a geek at heart I
could probably serve the marcomm group best because I am close to DC and
(though I say so myself - the web might agree) an accomplished presenter
who is accustomed to wearing a suit and tie. So if we have a story to
tell I would hope be able to tell it in an uncomplicated way without
seeming too weird to the intended audience.

I look forward to working with you.

regards
 Steve
