Hi Don, I agree that FOSS software adapted for special needs is a great idea
and quite convenient.
I have a couple of graduate students migrating proprietary applications
(such as the ones you describe, pretty simple albeit with licensing costs up
to 2000$) into Google web toolkit, Google Gears and Android. As soon as they
have running code I will let you know.
We opted for GWT as it provides running code for almost every web browser
(any other alternatives are welcomed). We believe that having code for
Android may be useful in next generation ebook Readers and tablet PC's.
A couple of years ago while visiting a school I noticed that students with
special needs often require their parents adapting learning contents (for
instance preparing a word document with arithmetic or language exercises)
before lessons take place.
Wouldn't it be great to have some kind of learning repository structured in
a way that parents could find (and contribute) content specific to:
cognitive needs, age and topic ?? (Wiki4all ?)
Regards,
David López
